The Linx 8900 Continuous InkJet Printer Provides Consistent Print with Minimal Effort to Aerosol Manufacturer

Pre-Solution Application

The client, an aerosol and liquid filling manufacturer, had several other models of continuous inkjet (CIJ) printers that were consistently unreliable.  These CIJ units caused significant downtime resulting in lost production time.  Along with the costs of repairs to units that were down, they were also required to pay a monthly service contract fee for an outside service tech to perform preventative maintenance on each unit.

The R.V. Evans’ Value Added Solution

After performing a Site Needs Analysis and thorough review of the application, an R.V. Evans Packaging Solution Specialist determined the appropriate value added solutions.  The recommendation: The FoxJet Linx 8900 Continuous Inkjet Printer.

Key Benefits of the Link 8900 Continuous Inkjet Printer

  • Automatic printhead flushing allows up to 100 starts and stops before recommended cleanings
  • Easi-Change® Service Module provides up to 13,000-18,000 hours of operation between service interventions
  • Simple one-touch fluid cartridge refills during printing allows for no mess, no tools and no mistakes
  • Extended shutdown – up to 3 months without printer flushing or draining between uses
  • 10″full-color user interface saves time while creating and editing messages with prompted fields for fast editing and easy message creation
  • Four models available to meet your unique high-speed continuous inkjet needs

Measurable Savings Realized

By implementing the Linx 8900 Continuous Inkjet Printers onto their production lines, our client has eliminated the cost and obligation of a monthly service contract by being able to perform their own Preventative Maintenance with the Easi-Change® Service Module.  Production downtime has also been decreased due to the reliability of many of the superior features of the Linx 8900.  Such as the automatic flushing, automatic fluid checking and sealed, industrial printhead.

Choosing a CIJ Printer: A 60-Second Analysis

Choosing a continuous inkjet (CIJ) printer can be complicated. Choosing what is right for you is always best done by working with a solutions representative. However, to get you started, it is best to know which manufacturers offer a specific key advantage you need- extended service intervals for more production time, lower maintenance costs, printing speeds, etc.

Here, I will provide you with an overview of key advantage areas of the Linx 8940 vs. four leading competitors’ comparable models.

ScreenHunter 116.png

Many continuous inkjet printers sport similar advantages, but the Linx 8940 leads the industry in energy consumption and operating temperatures, while matching  many industry-leading advantages as well. Blending these advantages together provides for a high-quality CIJ printer with a low total cost of ownership (TCO).

Additionally, printing speeds up to 1,230 feet-per-minute (FPM) allow users to print very quickly, despite other machines being able to print faster. 1,230 FPM is about 4,920 20-ounce soda bottles per minute. Printing that fast and only consuming a fraction of the energy certain competitors consume provides for a significant operating cost advantage.

The very best way to see the benefits the 8940 can bring to your operation is by requesting an on-site demonstration. To do that, fill out this short form here and comment that you’d like us to demonstrate our leading CIJ model!

The QuickSwitch Plus: Make it Easy!

Production should be as seamless as possible. Changeovers can inhibit seamless production. If you are a manufacturer that runs multiple products down the same line, we’ve got a solution to help you switch to different batch/date/lot codes more simply, accurately, and timely.

By combining the Linx 7900 CIJ printer with the QuickSwitch barcode scanner, operators can scan codes to automatically call up a pre-defined message from the 7900’s memory. This message contains the message, date, and other parameters pre-determined by the operators. Data can also be sourced from a PC or PLC, providing more automated code set up options. With this capability, there is no need to manually search for and select a message during each change over. Simply scan, confirm, and resume printing!

Which Printing Technology is Right For You?

Direct printing onto your product can potentially save costs up to 10x per year over printing onto a label.  But which technology should you be using to print your barcodes and text?  We analyzed four different printing technologies from FoxJet to find out which works best with certain applications.

Linx CJ400 sampleA

CIJ – Continuous Inkjet Printers

Small printers that are easy to maintain, use, and move.  Any printer from the FoxJet Linx Series are fast, no contact, and can print on a lot of different surfaces.

  1. Built to run. These printers are great in high production environments.  As technology has evolved, they have become more necessary to applications where a printer is not required daily.
  2. Most have a wide variety of ink colors and formulations (MEK, alcohol, acetone, etc.) that can be used to print on almost any surface.
  3. Can print very small characters at a very high rate of speed.
  4. Great throw distance.  Normally 1/8” to a 1/4”, this printer can work at almost an inch.

Keep in mind:

  • Initial cost can be higher than other solutions
  • Requires the use of ink and solvent.

Ideal for use in: Printing onto small individual products like bottles, and when portability is important to your printing needs.

TIJ – Thermal Inkjet

The three printers from FoxJet’s SoloSeries have a wide range of abilities, including up to 10 lines of alphanumeric text as well as logos and symbols.

  1. Can print up to 600x 600 dpi
  2. Since it is a cartridge-based system, it performs well in applications where the system will sit dormant for days at a time.
  3. Inks that can print on porous and non-porous surfaces
  4. Produces readable bar codes

Keep in mind:

  • To print larger than ½”, printheads are “stitched” together.  They rarely line up perfectly, so large characters or graphics may be slightly skewed at the ½” intervals.
  • Requires the head(s) to be very close to the substrate to be printed.

Ideal for use in: Lower volume applications and applications where the system will be idle for lengthy periods of time.

DOD – Drop On Demand

The 9x and 18x printheads from the Valve InkJet systems can print ½”-2” text. It also allows you to quickly develop messages with built in printing codes.

  1. Inexpensive way to get a code on a product
  2. Simple technology makes it easy to maintain and service
  3. Inks that can print on porous and non-porous surfaces
  4. Good throw distance (1/4” to ½”)

Keep in mind:

  • Prints dot matrix characters, which are less aesthetically appealing
  • Low resolution – not capable of printing quality graphics or logos

Ideal for use: When you just need to get a code on a box or product, and aren’t concerned about aesthetics.

Large Character – typically Trident or Xaar print engines

Reliable, flexible printing for bigger jobs and saving money in the long run.

  1. High resolution printing – graphics and logos look great
  2. Most offer a print window of 2”-4” high
  3. Produces readable bar codes

Keep in mind:

  • Most systems are for porous applications
  • Printhead must be less than a quarter-inch from substrate

Ideal for use in: Porous-only applications, when high resolution is a requirement.
