The QuickSwitch Plus: Make it Easy!

Production should be as seamless as possible. Changeovers can inhibit seamless production. If you are a manufacturer that runs multiple products down the same line, we’ve got a solution to help you switch to different batch/date/lot codes more simply, accurately, and timely.

By combining the Linx 7900 CIJ printer with the QuickSwitch barcode scanner, operators can scan codes to automatically call up a pre-defined message from the 7900’s memory. This message contains the message, date, and other parameters pre-determined by the operators. Data can also be sourced from a PC or PLC, providing more automated code set up options. With this capability, there is no need to manually search for and select a message during each change over. Simply scan, confirm, and resume printing!

Are Your Barcodes Readable?

Although a barcode may seem readable to the human eye, it may not be readable to a scanner.  This can create a plethora of issues, and can make it very hard to track a product, or even have your customer sending the product back to you.  The obvious solution to this is to make your barcodes more readable, but how do you do that?

It’s all about trial and error, and the best way to get results from those trials is a barcode verifier.  Verifiers are similar to scanners.  However, they have the added benefit of breaking down the makeup of the code itself.  Instead of just reading the code, a verifier can tell you the symbology, detect the parameters (including dimensional, reflectance, format, and contrast), and return a grade based on industry specific standards (like ANSI, GS1, and others).  Once you’ve got a verifier, you can start to examine the ways to solve the problems with your barcodes.  Is there not enough contrast?  Is the grade too low?

Once your verifier has helped you identify the problem, it’s time to find a solution.  Last month, we posted a blog about what printing technology is right for you.  You can find that blog here.  It focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of various types of printing technology from FoxJet, which all have a tested and guaranteed 99.9% first-read rate. This means that 999 times out of 1,000, your barcode will be readable not only to the human eye, but the strictest verifier and most unforgiving scanners.  This type of dependability will ensure that you have no issues getting your product out of your warehouse and into the hands of your customers.  No more returned packages, no more worry.

Overview of Stenciling vs Hand Held InkJet Printing

Marking and coding is an important part of the manufacturing process as well as throughout the supply chain process. Larger products and skids are among the products that often need to be organized, branded, numbered, or marked with codes, warnings and safety notices. Often, stenciling is a common method of marking and coding. Stenciling, however, can be a messy waste of time and cost. Luckily, there are alternate solutions for marking and coding your large products and skids as well as a range of other types of products. Handheld inkjet printers are the latest and definitely the greatest way to do this type of marking and coding. Let’s look at these two methods side-by-side.

  • Stenciling systems have significantly high start-up costs. This includes all the necessary supplies, including 2 different size punch machines, ink, rollers, oil boards and manual labor.
  • The time factor is significant, because each individual character of the label has to be cut. There is also no chance of real-time dating or time stamping, and any small mistake means that you have to re-cut an entire stencil!
  • Depending on the method of stenciling, the ink can easily run or bleed and the outline of the stencil can appear due to over-inking. There is also the issue of using too much or too little ink, because there is no way to control how much ink is used. This makes the print and the product it’s on look sloppy and unprofessional.
  • Stenciling is a bulky, cumbersome method that is more costly than it’s worth.

Handheld InkJet Printer

  • The start up cost of a HandJet EBS-250 inkjet printer is comparable a stencil system and the HandJet EBS-260 goes to the next level with the addition of an on-board computer.  All the features listed below save your business thousands of dollars in the long run.
  • The issue of time goes out the window, since these types of printers can edit messages straight on the machine, so you spend time typing, not cutting. These systems have multiple different character sizes, and can store up to 2 Gigabytes, so there’s even less time spent adjusting or fixing any mistake.  Not to mention the new EBS-260 is capable of printing up to four separate lines of code in one pass including images, logos, and 2D barcodes.
  • Handheld inkjet printers can control the amount of ink that gets applied to an object, so ink running or bleeding is never an issue. The labels always look professional, because the messages are printed smoothly and cleanly on to the object.
  • Handheld inkjet printers are not only a better solution, they’re a more cost effective solution that saves money in the long run as well.  The use of a handheld inkjet printers provides clear and concise print to ensure your products move smoothly through the supply chain.

We’ve only grazed the surface of the capabilities and usefulness of these marking and coding methods.
