Why Thickness and Price are not Indicators of Tape Quality

When many manufacturers go to market in search of tape to use for case sealing applications, the primary concern often seems to be the tape’s thickness (in mils) and the price. Purchasers often think to themselves, “Okay, which tape has the best mil rating/price ratio?”. However, this can cause many problems.

Let us take a look at a comparison between Shurtape’s AP 180 emulsion acrylic carton sealing tape vs. a competitor’s version.

Shurtape Competitor
Mil 1.9 1.9
Tensile (lbs./in. width) 27 30
Adhesion to Steel (oz/in. width) 44 4
Elongation % at breaking point 150 130
Holding Time (in hours) 15,000 6,000
Figure 1

Figure 1 indicates that the Shurtape brand shares the same mil rating as the competitive tape, and even has a lower tensile strength. However, 27 lbs./inch width is still relatively strong! Additionally, Shurtape’s version maintains 11x the adhesion to steel than the competition, a longer elongation-to-break, and a much longer holding time! This longer holding time and better elongation rate both translate to more economical tape usage and a much longer-lasting seal on your packages. If you are in need of a strong seal that will last long enough for your needs, Shurtape is the way to go.

Of course, it always comes down to the application and its needs. No tape is the single best tape. However, in search of your next tape source, it is very important not to default to the very common, yet flawed analysis of mil thickness/price.

It’s All About the Tapeheads

tapehead

We’ve talked in previous blogs about keeping products safe and secure once they leave the warehouse.  Good stretch film can keep products securely together on a skid, and custom products can keep everything in place while keeping your brand at the forefront of your customers mind.  Carton stapling tools are great for closing certain boxes.  However, in many production applications, securing your carton with carton closing tape is a reliable and cost effective way to keep your carton shut and its contents in place.  Depending upon the volume of your application, manual labor can be more costly, time consuming, and not always consistent or accurate.  When looking for the most efficient way to close your cartons securely, using high quality tapeheads in semi-automatic and fully automatic case taping equipment is an absolute must.

Tapeheads used in carton taping equipment automate the process of applying tape to a corrugated carton, and do the best job of applying the tape securely, cleanly, and quickly. But, not all tapeheads are created equal. Dekka and ShurSEAL™ tapeheads have many advantages that mean you can worry less about your products as they’re getting sealed to go out of your warehouse.

A large benefit of the ShurSEAL™ tapeheads is their unequaled wipe down consistency. While most tapeheads lack the ability to completely seal the tape on the edges and in the middle, shurSEAL™ tapeheads have an extremely consistent pressure profile, keep the pressure applied to every part between 20 and 28 psi. This means the adhesive part of the tape is on the product, keeping everything sealed, for certain. They are also some of the fastest machines available, while still maintaining incredible consistency and safety features.  In addition to the secure wipe down features, shurSEAL™ tapehead features include:

  • Dual Axis Locking Mandrel – easy tape loading guaranteed not to slip
  • Latching Dancer Arm – reduces noise and improved performance
  • Front & Rear Tab Length Adjustment – makes easy adjustment of your tape tab length at the front and rear
  • Angled Safety Blade – reduces the risk of finger injury
  • Exclusive Folded Edge Attachment – allows removal of the tape and opening boxes without the use of knife cutters
  • Tape Management System – audible and visual alarms to provide warnings for low tape, tape break, un-taped case, uncut tape, and case jams

Dekka tapeheads are similar to ShurSEAL™, and one of the largest benefits of these tapeheads is that they are designed to work well with any type of tape, no matter if it is premium or budget-priced. Constructed of high quality stainless steel and corrosion resistant, Dekka tapeheads are built to last and perform in a variety of production environments.  Dekka tapeheads are also very safe, with minimum knife exposure and adjustments available to ensure operator safety.  Here are a few other benefits of the Dekka tapeheads:

  • Interchangeable Mounting – simple to install and mount either top or bottom
  • Easy to Load – load your tape within 30 seconds
  • Easily Adjustable Roller Tension Spring – adjust main spring tension by choosing from one to four leverage points
  • Exclusive No Break Tape Advance – advances tape at the centerline to avoid edge stress where tape usually breaks
  • High Quality Molded Wipe Down Rollers – made of polyurethane result in tougher and longer lasting rollers = less maintenance
  • Knife Blade Remains Sharp Longer – with the help of built in oil pad on blade cove
  • External Tape Guide System – keeps tape ends in place to avoid costly effects of untapped cases

Don’t come undone, and don’t leave yourself worrying. Visit our website or YouTube channel, contact us, or schedule a site-needs analysis to make sure that you are getting the best quality tapeheads to ensure the secure taping of all of the cartons that exit your warehouse.

Branding Beyond the Box

Your brand is one of the most essential parts of your business. It is a constant reminder to your customers that your company offers the best solutions, at the best time, in the best way possible. So how do you consistently prove your commitment to quality while keeping your company and your brand at the forefront of your customers mind?

This is where your logo comes in. Your company’s logo is the center of your brand. Think about Coca-Cola or Nike. These logos are definitive parts of incredible branding, and the reason customers will pay extra money for a comparable soda or running jacket. This type of mentality works for not only B2C companies, but the B2B industry as well.

But why does this work? In the same way a certain sight or smell can make you remember a certain time in your life, a brand’s logo can make a customer think of something. For Nike, that something is comfort and durability. A consumer’s brain will actually shift it’s thinking and be more attracted to a certain product just from seeing that little swoosh on the front of it.

So, you have an awesome brand and a killer logo. Now you need to put it out there for your customers to see so they can start making these positive associations with your business. One of the simplest ways to do this is to put your brand on all of your product packaging. This way every quality item that you deliver to your customers will remind them of the great solutions you provide. You want your customers to have maximum exposure to your brand, so this logo placement doesn’t stop at the box your product comes in. There are a number of solutions that can ensure that your logo is involved in every step of the packaging process.

R.V. Evans’ partners will put your logo on almost every essential packaging item your company uses. Some of these items include:

These solutions don’t just get your logo in more places, they also have the quality and durability to make sure your product gets delivered safe and sound. The combination of logo exposure and excellent packaging methods will ensure that your company will always be associated with positivity and quality.

4 Ways to Reduce Packaging Costs and Increase Productivity

“Stretch wrappers are one of the easiest pieces of machinery to cost justify, use, and maintain,” Mark Collins, Vice President of Sales at Orion Packaging, said. A majority of the cost justification comes from both material and labor cost savings. Stretch film is designed and engineered to be stretched (obviously). The interesting part is just how much stretching can save you. By elongating the stretch film, the material becomes much more puncture and tear resistant. Not only does it make the material stronger, but it also increases the load holding ability of the stretch film. Material and labor cost savings are not the only benefit of the right stretch-wrap machine, though.

            •           Material Cost Savings

In terms of material savings, today’s high-performance machines pre-stretch the material by 250 percent or more. This means that every foot of stretch film you use on a role can cover two-and-a-half times as much area that it normally would. A material savings this astronomical is a large contributing factor to cost justification and the great ROI that stretch-wrap machines have. This 250 percent increase often outweighs the 10-20 percent material increase that is seen from hand wrapping or even from some older machines. A majority of stretch-wrap machines often pay themselves back in a year or two, and some in as little as seven months, simply as a result of these material cost savings.

            •           Labor Cost Savings

Another side of cost savings is the reduced labor rates from fully automating your stretch wrap process. Manual hand wrapping involves 100 percent direct labor. This is often time-consuming and leaves room for the element of human error. The next step is semi-automatic wrapping which involves the worker attaching the stretch wrap to the pallet load, starting the machine and then cutting the film tail at the end of the process. This is a little bit less direct labor and allows the worker to perform other duties during the wrapping process. Finally, there is fully automatic wrapping equipment that requires almost no direct manual labor. A conveyor system delivers the load to the automatic wrapping system which wraps and cuts the load, weighs down the film tail, and transports the wrapped load to the staging area for pickup.

            •           Productivity Gains

The productivity that is gained from a fully automated process is something that is harder to measure. Though it is less tangible, it is still very valuable. With less direct labor involved in the wrapping process, workers are able to perform other value adding duties. This lowers labor costs while increasing efficiency in the process.

            •           Customer Relationship

Customers satisfaction is something that is essential to any company. By fully automating the stretch wrapping process, there is a decrease in damaged goods during shipping. This means that the product shows up at the customer’s door in the condition that was promised, improving their trust and satisfaction. A fully automatic stretch-wrap machine also provides a level of quality and consistency that will improve the reputation of your business with customers. When a client is assured and confident that their product will be delivered in a quality wrapped pallet load, consistently, they are more likely to continue doing business with you.

These are just a few of the many reasons why a stretch-wrap machine can benefit your application and provide cost justified savings to your process.
